The girls in my life

There use to be many girls and boys in my life when I taught.  They already use to enjoy my alter ego who was not becky my ball joint doll {see her blog:  http://rhubsknit-beckymyalterego.blogspot.com/), but at that time was a beaver puppet Bucky.  Why when I was going to talk about the dolls in my life did I start talking about my toddler/preschool class?  I know yesterday when I was on facebook I suddenly saw the girls I had taught almost all grown up and young women.  You can see the photo of them the preschool girls now all grown up done by Tanja Olsen one of the parents I had in my class who is a professional photographer.  The photo is at: http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/photo.php?fbid=485072582147&set=a.480844827147.261654.761777147  I am so glad that they all still get together now and then.

Now rather than using puppets for my alter ego or devil's advocate, I use dolls and no longer do I teach but I make jewelry for the dolls, knit and crochet items for them.  I actually started to really get involved in crafting at SWPCC where I taught those girls who have grown up by doing the crafts with them and enjoying them unlike at past preschools which were more involved in a pretty outcome so the child didn't actually make the items in the long run without the help of the teacher.  I loved Southwest Parent-Child Collective as they really supported my style of teaching and my philosophy of teaching which was Developmentally Appropriate Practice:  DAP as the children get to experience and learn from what they experience and the curriculum is based on their interests and where they need to stretch themselves.
Then today on facebook a friend Melanie of Melacacia Art Dolls on facebook, she was worried about talking to her doll momo a blythe doll about feeling bad about selling her on ebay of course now she is coming to me, but many of us let her know we all talk to our dolls.  I actually think it helps us keep our sanity and joy.  It reminds us of the child we once were and still are inside.

You can also find Melanie's dolls on a blog at this sight:  http://melacacia.blogspot.com/  The name of her blog is Art and Dolls by Melacacia.  I believe I refer to her blog at the side of this page although there are quite a few doll blogs I follow.

The last weekend I was suppose to go to a xmas ball joint meet. but it was up in Vancouver, the USA one, and raining hard so instead I stayed home.  I will try to make it in the spring, but I love going to the blythe meets here they are so full of life and after most people leave I will wait until we are down to four people and talk and wind down some before going home.  Above is a xmas card I made with picnik.  The actual photo to your right shows the photo that I took in low light with the iphone and added the shadows using iPhoto on the mac.  There were a few other photos I took, but so many of them were in low light that they really looked grainy.  I really wish we also had a momoko meet here, but of course that would be pushing it.  A friend I made online named Blue takes the most increible momoko photos another doll made in Japan.  You can find her photos if you are on flickr at:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/blue-is-me/
I have taken very few momoko photos as I started collecting them a few years earlier than blythe dolls which I believe I started collecting in 2006 so I must of started to collect the momoko dolls before I had even a camera or phone that was digital back in 2002 or 2003.  So I only have a few photos of them.  Here is one of  my more recent photos with one of my blythe girls Vinter Arden and with my momoko Harvest Moon.  Both the girls just arrived.  One day I will take a photo of each type of doll family, i.e. my blythe family, my momoko family, my lati bjd. family and my Jaime family.  I have around 30-50 each, except for my jaime family of four, so I may have to break them up into smaller groups and make a triptich or use some other technique for the groups. As for my other dolls like the licca and maba barbies, takara barbies and the japanese mattel barbie family as well as the USA barbie family and other mattel offshoots made in japan and later other places; I won't even try to take a photo of  rather they may just appear in a photo.

These dolls though keep me human and remind me of the dreams of the caring child inside!

I am so excited as Tokori made by Melacacia is coming home to my house. I am not sure why the person who bought her from Melacacia just a few months ago is selling her as all she said to me was that Tokori didn't fit into her collection. I am so happy that she is mine now. All I wait for is for Tokori to arrive at my house. Goldie will be so happy now not to be the only blythe mohair girl here.

My Teru Just Arrived

My Teru Just Arrived
Originally uploaded by rhubs knit
I was growing tired of Lati as I have many yellows and the waiting time was getting longer and longer. Plus I did not feel that I was interested in anymore of their more character like dolls that they had been creating lately; for instance the Pirate Yellows. Then I saw that Lati was offering a new green that was tan and not only was he tan, but he was incredibly good looking. So I decided to take a chance and order one last doll; his name is Teru.
Well he has arrived and he just so to speak knocks my socks off or as I said at the time; I was dancing with my heart in the air as he is a beautiful handsome. His tan is so rich in colour compared to the original tan Greens and I think it is even richer than the Gloomy Garden Greens. The photo on the Lati site even shows him as darker than all the other Greens, but I was not sure how true the photo would be and if the photo would bare any resemblance to the color he would be in real life. While there are a few lighter areas by the seams, he still is so perfect and one can expect a few minor lighter areas with this dark a tan. All I can say is I am in love and he came a lot quicker than Yellow Zorro, Elena and White basic special Kong. Although he is so much different than my other Green tans I still look forward to using him with them as I now have 3 girls and 3 boys.  Unlike most collectors, I have been keeping all the Latis as the sex they were released as originally when Lati created the idea for each of them and I know I am one of the few with so many boys. A friend of mine, who has just recently received her Teru too,  has turned him into a girl and he also makes a beautiful girl as all Latis do. I had someone ask me on flickr or cafe lati which sex he was going to be as so many Lati collectors do turn their male Yellow and Green Latis into girls and I just thought to myself how could anyone have all girls and no boys, I guess they like having the same sex as they are themselves.  Plus I think it is easier to change the smaller White, Yellow and Green Latis into the other sex just like we sometime mistake younger children for the opposite sex as it is only as we grow older that our sexuality usually becomes apparent to the outside world.
I will keep watching Latis new releases now just in case there is a ball joint doll that is made by them that I just can't do without. However they are really too expensive for me to keep purchasing them. Many are unhappy with Lati because of the long waits and problems that they have had with Lati. I have had a few issues with Lati, but nothing except one that could not be worked out. I am curious what the Xmas releases will look like...the Halloween release of Yellows was quite cute; I just have too many Yellows to purchase anymore, at least that is what I think right now. We will see. Lol :)

My Latest Blythes

Romina of "I have wings" is one of the best and most creative seamstresses.
Also as seen in the right hand side of this tryptic you will see Odeco by petworks and next to her the doll the farthest to the right is the newest addition to blythe called Middie. She is the latest addition to the blythe group created by CWC. Middie is close in size to Odeco, however she has longer legs. In case I am not clear Middie is on the far right in the right hand photo.

She has two other keychains that I would like to add one is a green Kuma and one is a white Kuma and the whte Kuma has hair like this little fellow, but I don't want to spend anymore money right now as I may just want to go to effiethedal's new living quarters down in California since she is only out here for about a year. I know she will be coming to stay with me and is going to be at BlytheCon 2011, yet it just isn't the same as when you visit the other person especially one that exists where it will be warm through winter and close only a few blocks to the beach something that I so miss living here as both in Chicago and in Vancouver I could quite quickly get to water that you could not see the other side of...here there are no really great swim spots plus the river is so polluted.
I also went ahead and ordered some of the new petite blythe made by hasbro in the states, well not exactly petite blythe in the Japanese sense as they are called Littlest petshop Blythe loves Littlest petshop and while the eyes do not close like the petites made by takara in Japan, the head tilts 4 different ways and her legs seem to be made well I have heard from Supernenek. I love that Supernenek added me to the group without even knowing that I had ordered not just one, but two. I should get my first two hasbro blythes on Tuesday then perhaps I will purchase one more or several more depending on how I like them.

Alligators, Frog Legs and Dragon Tatoos!

Went to a birthday last night at Montage.  Yes there was alligator to eat, oh and there were frog legs on the menu that I haven't had since I was a child.  I saw catfish listed too - a little more mainstream.  The singles in our group ended up at the table of 16.  While those of us married ended up at a table of 6 all down the same line or row.  Yes we were a group of 20!  Those of us at the table of 6, at least the women, all ordered the same thing the special Coho Salmon which was not as exciting as the other Cajun items on the menu such as even a Jambalya.  What has happened in my old age that I no longer eat the more interesting and adventuresome items on the menu?  I went to take photos of the event with my iPhone only to find out that it was dead.  So for this blog no photos...which is too bad as later the leftovers turned into various creatures and items out of tin foil to take home.  I had an island another had a flower, there was a raptor or a dragon depending on whose eyes you were looking through...oh and finally a standard swan.

The food wrapped up in foil reminded me of the restaurants that use to do the same thing back in Chicago, at least the good ones - supposedly!  it also reminded me of how I use to wrap Christmas presents in my first marriage and even early on in my present marriage.  I would use tin foil rather than wrapping paper and I created animals and one time even a two foot fountain gushing with water of tin foil keeping the tiny present a secret until the holiday it was for, be it Hanukkah or Christmas.  I was also reminded of the Doctor Oz show that I watched earlier that often the Special in a restaurant is actually the item they want to push as it is near it's end.  I could only think that at least I was living in a place where the fish had not been contaminated by oil and a river though polluted probably not as polluted at the moment as the Mississippi, so hopefully the fish was better than the other items; however, I was disappointed as the fish was overcooked, only when I got to the center did it taste properly done.

Montage is noisy and not for conversation, but I did have a good time with the people I was with...I was entertained even if I was not adventuresome this time.  Another time I will have the alligator there and perhaps it will be properly done in the future.  No more specials for me at Montage.

All these thoughts bring me to the book and to the movie, 'Eat, Pray and Love'.  I have only skimmed the book and need to read it now before I go see the movie with one of my good friends from my midwife group.  Should be good, yet I haven't heard the review of the movie yet.  Sounds like a nice fantasy for those of us married and with children.

Looking in at hubby reading on the iPad.
Another book that I have wanted to read like everyone else is 'The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo'.  I wanted to buy all 3 books at Costco, but hubby said we could only afford 2 and after all my doll purchases that is probably true.  He started to read the books right away after I suggested them and now has downloaded the third one on his iPad that I gave him for our anniversary.  Which anniversary I cannot remember I think around the Twenty Third, but I wanted to return the favor from a year or two ago when Hubby gave me the iPhone 3GS.  Yes, at some point I will upgrade and give him my iPhone 3GS, but I will wait until the iPhone 4 has been improved...maybe by the time I get a new iPhone it will be the iPhone 6 or 7 who knows.  I only know I want to see the original foreign film of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo' and not the Hollywood version.  First I need to read the books like everyone else is doing this summer.

Hubby reading while on iPad.
It appears when I read the third book on the iPad that it could be downloaded like a Kindle or an eBook.  I do not know what system Hubby used on the iPad, but he can use more than one.  Pretty exciting I think.

A Crocheted Swatch Turned into a Prototype for a Blythe Headband

I have been busy teaching myself to crochet and at the moment I am working at crocheting a headband for my Blythe dolls incorporating not only a button, but also some feathers.  I am hoping the next headband I knit or crochet will incorporate not only a button and feathers, but also some of my favorite beads.  I would like to provide others with these headbands for their Blythe dolls
Here is the start of one of the crocheted headbands...

If I had taken the time to measure my swatch rather than periodically hold it up in relation to Blythe's head which I did, I still would have forgotten that there is not much of a head for the headband to go around and stay.  Instead one needs to create a diagonal when joining ends of the crocheted strip or long swatch where one side of the long strip is shorter than the other side which is longer in length where the headband is joined.  My lesson is learned.  At least I have the prototype for the band and can now knit with many different kind of stitch patterns and I can now crochet, my newest skill, with many different kind of stitch patterns; headbands which may contain beads, button or buttons and feathers.  I will also continue to make my button feather barrettes for blythe dolls.

Here below is a photo of the finished prototype for a Blythe crocheted headband.

Hopefully this gives you a feel for what the headbands will be like when crocheted.  Of course sometimes I will use finer silk, cotton or even wool when I crochet and I will also knit in different stitch patterns which of course I feel much more confident doing and so then can also add beads to either the crocheted or knit headbands from the jewelry I make the blythes and people as well as the feather barrettes I have been making blythe and lati dolls.

Blythe | News

Blythe | News Surely Dear LeLe Girl is a very sweet new addition to the blythe world if only I didn't already have so many red heads and in fact a beautiful kenner redhead with bangs. I will have to see what she actually looks like when she is released. Perhaps she will look quite a bit different than my other girls!!!

Surprises - Buying A Car For A Dog?

Little did I know the last time I wrote in this blog and posted it on Monday the 25th of January that soon after I would get a call from my husband about a car sitting in the lot of an old dealer now a tire/mechanic/body shop. My husband phoned me because the car he had seen was like his a PT cruiser, but it was a convertible. The car was an 06 verses my husband's which is an 07. The body was silver, verses my husbands which is cream colored, and it only had 29,000 miles on it. Sounded good, but I hadn't been looking for a car.
Now you have to understand I have been using my husband's car, his 07 cream cruiser, because the now service dog that I rescued from the Oregon Humane Society is really too big to fit into my 93 white mustang convertible. Most of the time it isn't a problem for me to use my husband's car as he rides a motorized bicycle back and forth to work. When it is really stormy my husband takes my mustang convertible.
Now this rearrangement in cars was not a problem as we both had cars we could drive when we needed to use a specific one. Sometimes my husband uses the cruiser on the weekend to shop at Costco or Home Depot when he needs the cargo space and at those times I am usually home and not needing a car to transport Andy my extremely large black lab and I get to use my mustang when I am not taking Andy in a car. The problem is that Andy being a service dog usually goes everywhere with me so I was no longer using my convertible. Sometimes it would sit there in the driveway for 3 weeks before it was used again.
You have to understand neither my husband or I drive much, we only drive when necessary. However I really like driving a convertible and my husband remembered that when we were in California last summer at a family wedding I had seen a convertible PT Cruiser in a parking lot. I said to my husband at the time that it was too bad that a convertible hadn't been available when he bought his car and that something like that might work for Andy and I. Nice guy that my hubby is, he remembered what I had said...so on Monday after he was done with work we went to look at the car. Both he and I took it for a test drive and it seemed nice, but I wasn't about to jump and suddenly by a car. We learned that several other people were looking at the car and that the fellow who owned the car was currently in Germany, but would be back in the States briefly as his wife was now moving over with him. Whoever was ready to purchase the car first would get it. Knowing this again didn't make me want to make a snap decision. I told the fellow at the shop that I would sleep on it.
The next day I felt sick and ended up sleeping all day and both nights. I woke up on Wednesday and started to think about purchasing the car. I phoned my husband and told him I thought I might find out if the car was still there if the car was gone that was fine and if the convertible was still there I might make an offer. My husband mentioned that the blue book price on the 06 convertible was $11,000 something closer to $12,000 so suddenly if I was to make an offer it sounded like a good deal.
When I phoned the fellow he said someone had made an offer on the car, but wasn't coming right down. The person interested in the car had paid to have an inspection done on the car and was serious about it. I thought it wsa gone, but said would you take 9,000 if I came down right now and paid cash. (I had had some stocks bought out by another company so although it was a loss I had some extra cash.) He made a call to the owner of the car who had just come back for a few days and was in Seattle. The owner said whoever paid first got the car and 9,000 was fine. Suddenly I had a new car!
Now what to do with the mustang, I really didn't want to sell it as it still runs well. Our youngest son doesn't have his license yet, but he is 17 so I decided to keep it for him and let him know he could take some drivers-ed classes or take some driving classes through an agency and that I would let him use the mustang once he got his license an opportunity that neither I, my husband or my older son ever had. I think my youngest son is excited and I told him there was no rush, he should only learn to drive when he was ready. So now suddenly we own 3 cars whereas for most of my married life we only owned one car and I took the bus. Such a change and such a nice surprise. On Thursday I was able to take my son and my dog to an appointment in the car and I loved it. SO I GUESS ONE COULD SAY, I BOUGHT A CAR FOR MY DOG!

Time, An Endless Struggle

Today I tried to go through my email and clear it out. Lol! I thought it wouldn't take long, but instead it took me through some incredible sites, blogs and visits to youtube. I'd like to say I finished, but no I didn't. Which brings me to the subject of how do you limit your time on the internet and get your own work done, find the time to blog and post important information on your sites as well as visit your friends sites to keep up with what they are doing. As well as leave comments in appropriate places.
I still need to find the time to learn how to post the last three photos I have taken on my blog here and how to post various badges here after that perhaps my blog will look a little more interesting and will certainly give you more of an idea of the things I am up too. I believe posting photos here will be tomorrows goal, as well as taking another 15 minutes to tidy up the living room of my house, taking some of the items up to my studio. Knitting tools will remain down in the music room rather than being moved upstairs with my other items. I am also wondering whether my beads shouldn't remain downstairs here too.
I also need to find the time to regularly check the groups on flickr. that I started or moderate as well as various sites on the web where I do the same thing. Here, I am just wetting your appetite for links I will post in the future.
Admist everything else, I want to take piano lessons and take a glass class with my husband. Then when organized and having had some fun, I may return to classes in the fall having taken some time off.
I guess life is all about making the time and space for it all as there is so much to wet the appetite!

A few girls dressed!

A few girls dressed! I absolutely love Tiffany's girls - Squeakymonkey! If you love blythe and have not seen her work; both her custom girls or the outfits she sews for blythe you may want to go to her blog, flickr site & her Boutique. The boutique can be found at: http://www.squeakymonkey.com/ There are other individuals whose work I love too, such as Romina's work ihavewings at: http://ihavewingsatelier.com/ If you have a chance take a look at these individuals' work. Their work may be expensive, but it is worth it to have items for your more valuable dolls that are well made. You can see links to their blogs on the lower right hand side of this page. Enjoy!!!

And So I Cry - Yes I Have Given, But It is Not Enough!

I hope everyone who reads this blog gives something to one of the agencies in their country helping Haiti. I don't know if it is because I lost someone this past year or because I can barely take care of myself being disabled in many ways except for my mind, but I so want to do more for those in Haiti than I have already financially. All I can do is cry now that I have given money and I continue to cry. I wish I could fly down there and help all the children who are alone or hurting and just need comforting.
I wish I could help start some sort of schooling for them after taking care of medical needs and housing. Yet here I am stuck, I thought well maybe I could help develop my own relief effort to rebuild schools and yet right now with all the pain, I wish I could hold a child's hand who is in pain or has loss. Simply be there for them. But what they need first is water, food and medical care.

Time is a Funny Thing

I have so much time and so little these days. I now have beautiful Ikea shelves with glass door fronts to move so many of my ball joint dolls - my latis, my blythe and my momoko dolls onto the shelves and yet as I say that I have two shelves up inside and I see just how many miniature pieces of furnishings and dolls I have...! It would have been so much easier to have started with storage space first and to have added dolls and miniatures second, ah, but that is not the way it was to be...! So what will I do? I think I have decided to start going backwards. Does that sound odd to add the newest first to the shelves. What have I just received?, a beautiful momoko called puppy garden and mine has beautiful long flowing blond wavy ponytails on each side. I still a haven't taken a photo of her as she is still safely in the boxing she comes in.
As I play with my blythes more often and take them to blythe meets it does not seem as important to put them on the shelf first and yet they are what creates most of the mess downstairs in our living room and it is for just that reason I should move them onto shelves upstairs first. I also have container of clothes I am trying to sort. My dolls have better clothes than I these days.
As for my Latis, well Becky, Beth and Cherny all travel with me so they must always be ready to be on the go, but the most recent Latis - the unicorns although they have gone to a ball joint meet here in town, they are now ready to find a magical, mystical shelf to share with the magicians, just how I am to create this I do not know.
I know you are probably wondering about all these names if you do not know me especially since I have no photos posted on this page yet and I am just starting this blog, but if you would like to see photos of many of my dolls you can do so by going to flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/rhubsknit/ there at flickr except for my Momoko mentioned here you can find most of my Lati and my Blythe photographed.
Since this is the start of my blog I should mention that I have at least 3 dollhouses as well as old cardboard Barbie set ups and many other types of folding homes. But two of the doll houses are the types that you build, each is a different style. One is an English Tudor and the other is of course the Standard Victorian/Queen Anne style that gets meshed together somehow. Both are in need of work, but the Tudor already houses some of the German and Swedish doll furniture I collected when I was a child. You will find photos of each dollhouse on my flickr page although not under doll house I am afraid. This I believe is one activity I will do today and that is to create a dollhouse photo set on flickr so that even though the houses may appear in other sets with the dolls someone who goes to my flickr page can easily find my dollhouses. The other dollhouse I have is Madeline's meaning the doll and yes the character in children's books. I also have the dolls, both in cloth and in the size that fits in the doll house which is an 8" size which is a very good size too for some of my Latis. Enough for now have fun looking at some of my photos on flickr as you only have to join (and it's free) to look remember you can find me at http://www.flickr.com/photos/rhubsknit/ please note I own the copyright on all photos under my name unless otherwise noted. Thanks!
